School districts should contact Jaime Lyn Knight (jlknight@rideaf.net) to set up an outreach consultation for any student with hearing loss that may need support to thrive in the mainstream school.

The URI Speech and Hearing Centers provide comprehensive clinical services, both at the Kingston campus and our Pawtucket facility. The Department of Audiology at Women & Infants Hospital offers hearing services for children and adults of all ages. Our team works closely with the Newborn Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) medical providers to coordinate audiology services for newborns, particularly infants with multiple medical challenges. We work closely with Early Intervention and various school systems to provide quality services for toddlers and school-aged children. We have extensive training and experience in the diagnosis and management of hearing loss resulting from middle ear disease, noise exposure, aging, and many other causes.

Gallaudet Regional Center East will send a deaf or hard of hearing tutor into the family’s home once a week to work with the family. The goal of this program is to introduce family members to Sign Language, enabling them to communicate with their child at the earliest age possible.

The Gallaudet University Regional Center-East (GURC-East), hosted at Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill, Massachusetts, is one of Gallaudet’s four regional centers devoted to providing services, programs and resources for deaf and hard of hearing individuals and their communities.

Northern Rhode Island Collaborative’s Auditory Oral Foundations was developed to capitalize on improving and expanding technologies for the hearing impaired – in particular the very young. Our students, using technologies such as hearing aids and cochlear implants, learn techniques to better communicate.

The Auditory Oral Foundations program is part of the Northern Rhode Island Collaborative (NRIC). Our commitment is to prepare children for an education in their community schools by providing them with the tools they will need for successful inclusion and achievement.

Persons with a hearing or speech disability

Telecommunications Relay Services permit persons with a hearing or speech disability to use the telephone system via a text telephone (TTY) or other device to call persons with or without such disabilities.

To make using TRS as simple as possible, you can simply dial 711 to be automatically connected to a TRS operator. No cost.
